New Food Provider Offers Healthy Lunch Options to School District

by Andrea Fereshteh

Students heading back to school in the Hopewell Valley Regional School District this fall will be able to select a new, healthier lunch option from a new food service provider.

Pomptonian, who was selected as the district’s food service provider earlier this summer, is based in New Jersey and manages cafeterias and vending operations in nearly 33 primary and secondary school locations across the state.

In an email to parents yesterday, Robert Colavita, the school district’s business administrator, announced that Pomptonian will kick off a new pilot elementary lunch program called “Village Fresh” this fall.

The Village Fresh menu will include all white meat chicken dishes, fresh “grab and go” salads, Boar’s Head deli bar or “grab and go” sandwiches/wraps each day. A flyer sent with the email said Pomptonian plans to also host food event days “like Picnic Day, Asian Cuisine Day, Breakfast Bar Day, Sushi Day, and more.”

Last spring, Hopewell Elementary School piloted a healthy lunch program featuring locally sourced options, that was discontinued when the school district switched food service providers. The Pomptonian healthy lunch option is available at all four district elementary schools this year.

“This menu will feature healthier, more natural items and local produce that contain no antibiotics, preservatives, hormones or nitrates; are vegetarian fed and sustainably farmed,” Colavita said in the email.

The alternative menu will be offered to interested students and staff each day for $3.75/meal ($5.00 for adults). Families wishing to participate must register for the program by August 29. The standard lunch menu will continue to be offered to all students for $2.50 per meal.
