Obituary: Reverend William Shaub

by Amie Rukenstein

Reverend William Shaub, former Chaplin of the Union Fire Company and Rescue Squad, Chaplin of the Hopewell Valley Veterans Association and former Pastor of the Titusville Presbyterian Church, has passed away.

According to his son, Timothy Shaub, Rev. Shaub served in both World War II and Viet Nam. He earned a doctorate degree while serving as the command chaplain with the 78th Reserve Army Command at Willow Grove. He had 34 years of military service and was the longest-serving pastor (29 years) of the Presbyterian Church of Titusville.

Shall We Gather, the biography of the Titusville Presbyterian Church, notes that Rev. Shaub was born in 1926 in Tanta, Egypt to Robert C. and Imo B. Shaub who were then serving as missionaries. He grew up in Salt Lick, PA and graduated from Clark University in Massachusetts in 1948 and from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 1952. During his tour of duty in Viet Nam, he was wounded and was awarded both the Bronze Star for valor and the Purple Heart. When he retired from active duty at the rank of Colonel, he was awarded the Army’s Legion of Merit. Shall We Gather also notes that Titusville Presbyterian Church’s record of mission work was “broad and creative” during Rev. Shaub’s tenure and that a mission statement and a vision statement crafted in 1997, “reflect unmistakably the very best elements of Rev. Shaub’s love, care, and concern for the people of this church and this village.”

Timothy Shaub said that Rev. Shaub passed peacefully with his family by his side. “I’ve become who I am because of his love and guidance. I’m going to miss him sorely. RIP Dad, I’m proud to be your son,” he said.

The flags at the Hopewell Valley September 11th and Emergency Services Memorial will be lowered to half staff in his honor.

Union Fire Company and Rescue Squad, and the whole community, thank him for his many years of service to our community and pray that he Rests in Peace.

Funeral arrangements will be posted when available.
