Political Newcomer Joins Hopewell Borough Council

by Mary Galioto

Hopewell Borough’s newest council member, Shelby Tewell, was sworn-in this month filling by Roxanne Klett’s vacated seat, as Klett has taken an employment position with the Borough and is unable to serve her term as an elected official.

Born in Long Beach, California, Tewell grew up primarily in Fairfax, Virginia and went to Clemson University in South Carolina. For many years, Tewell worked in Manhattan for Liz Claiborne. In 2004, Tewell, her husband and three sons, moved to Hopewell Borough and fell in love with the quaint town.

Tewell has three sons: her oldest, Will, is 15 and a freshman at The Pennington School; her middle son, Matthew, is 14 and is in 8th grade at Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart; and her youngest son, Nate, is 10 and thoroughly enjoying his first year of school at Hopewell Elementary School. Tewell and her family belong to St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Princeton, where she and her husband, Fred, run the Pre-Cana Ministry. Currently, Tewell is an independent interior designer, working primarily on residential projects throughout the county.

“Personally, I am interested in raising awareness to pedestrian safety in our small town,”said Tewell to MercerMe. “Two years ago, we had a cousin tragically killed while crossing the street on her way to work in Louisville, Kentucky. I believe that — unfortunately — there will always be driver error, but if there is anyway to increase the level of visibility for pedestrians while crossing the street, it should be implemented.”

“I’m looking forward to filling this open position for the next 9 months,” Tewell shared. “And I hope that we can, as a group, continue to make Hopewell Borough a wonderful place to live.
