Residents Rescued from House Fire in Hopewell Hunt

by Mary Galioto

The Hopewell Township Police Department, along with the Hopewell Fire Department, responded to a residence on Caroline Drive on the report of a structure fire. This structure is a two story single family type residence in a development.

The fire was called in after the residents were awoken by smoke detectors sounding in the home. A male and female adult were able to evacuate the residence from the second floor and exit out a first floor entry door. Another male family member who was staying with the residents crawled out a second floor window to a roof ledge where he was rescued by responding police and firefighters. Firefighters arrived to find fire consuming the rear corner of the residence.  All three occupants were transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The Hopewell Fire Department, under the command of Chief Joseph Novak, along with the Pennington Fire Company, Union Fire Company and Rescue Squad, Hopewell Valley Emergency Services, Lawrenceville Fire Department, Princeton Fire Department, Montgomery Volunteer Fire Companies #1 and #2, and the Rocky Hill Fire Department assisted with fighting the fire.

Due to a lack of fire hydrants in the area, the responding fire departments deployed over 3000’ feet of hose to supply water to the blaze.

The Hopewell Rescue Squad transported the victims to the hospital.

The residence suffered extensive fire damage, as well as heat, smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but does not appear to be suspicious and remains under investigation by Hopewell Township Police Department Detective Frank Tulko, Hopewell Valley Emergency Services personnel and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

There were no reported injuries from personnel battling the blaze.
