Revitalization of Hopewell Broad Street Continues with Grand Opening of Sourland Cycles

by Mary Galioto

The revitalization of Hopewell’s Broad Street continues this year with the grand opening of Sourland Cycles, a full-service bicycle shop featuring one of the broadest selections of bikes in the region. MercerMe covered their construction progress last February — check out the article renderings and backstory.

Approved and built in less than a year, the 4,000+ square foot store started out as an 1860’s house that for years was home to a local accountant. The renovation, by Cornerstone Carpentry & Contracting LLC* and architect Paul Buda, restored the historic look of the street front while adding a 3,000 sq. ft, two-story atrium-style addition on the back.

Sourland Cycles carries road, mountain, trail, family and kids bikes from Giant, Liv, the women’s line of bikes, Specialized, BMC and Linus. They also carry the fastest –growing electric-assist bike in the country, Pedego.

The owners, Russ White and Michael Gray, had their “soft-opening” in time for the holiday shopping season, they saved their big announcement for the spring riding season.

IMG_8473“Our holiday season was a great start for us,” said White, who is also the founder of the Trenton Bike Exchange and Firehouse Cycles in Yardley. “We got a tremendous positive response from our customers and the business community in Hopewell. The winter opening allowed us to get prepared for our first spring season.”

In addition to the Giant, Liv and BMC line of bikes they opened with, the store recently picked up the Specialized brand of bikes and accessories. “We are really excited about the depth and breadth of our line of bikes. We now have the top two of the four major brands in the US as well as a couple other carefully selected brands of bikes and clothing. This will allow our customers the ability to comparison shop without leaving the store,” Gray added.

The new bike store on Broad Street will soon be joined by three new ventures on the other side of the street at the former Sunoco service station. Step in Stone, a tile and flooring store recently relocated to the new building, flanked by home decorator Amy Karyn and architect firm Think Form, all of whom have relocated from other spots in the area.

And the former sports car restoration specialist next door to Sourland Cycles has new ownership and became Hopewell Motors, specializing in restored and refurbished German automobiles.

Sourland Cycle’s grand opening, April 11, will feature demo bike rides across their range of brands and styles, hourly mountain/trail rides through St. Michael’s Preserve, prizes, how-to classes, special one-day discounts, raffles, food from area restaurants including a joint venture with the Brick Farm Market.

League of American Bicyclist Instructor Jennifer Laurita will kick off the grand opening on Thursday (4/9) at 6:30pm with her presentation “Welcome to all Cyclists” welcoming cyclists to the shop and also welcoming and encouraging all cyclists to be part of the community of cyclists.  Jennifer will use some humor and a presentation to show that we are all cyclists.  She will also take questions on road safety and biker etiquette.
