See Fire Trucks and a Police Helicopter, Learn Fire Prevention and Emergency Safety Skills, and Meet Hopewell Valley’s First Responders at Oct. 12 Fire Safety Open House

Hopewell Township, NJ With live fire/rescue and haz-mat demonstrations, firetruck tours, a photo booth, music, food, Smokey Bear, and even a police helicopter landing, there’s truly fun for everyone at Hopewell Valley’s Oct. 12 Fire Safety Open House, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hopewell Township Municipal Complex, 201 Washington Crossing Road in Titusville.

Those who attend may also learn important fire safety and prevention skills that could one day save their life or the life of someone they love. Firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs from Hopewell Valley Emergency Services and the township’s volunteer fire, rescue, and emergency medical units will all be on hand to teach children and adults ways they can help themselves stay safe. Children can practice escaping from realistic yet harmless smoke in the HVES Fire Safety Smoke House and use a fire extinguisher to put out a small, controlled fire, for example. Adults can take a short course in hands-only CPR.

“As Hopewell Township firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs, the core of our mission is protecting residents during emergencies, but it is also very important that we provide residents with skills and information that they can use to keep themselves safe,” said Andrew Fosina, fire official with the Hopewell Valley Bureau of Fire Safety and an organizer of the free event, which is sponsored by the Hopewell Valley Bureau of Fire Safety and Hopewell Valley Uniformed Firefighters IAFF 3897.

This year’s national Fire Prevention Week theme embraces the huge and important role everyone plays in their safety and that of their family: “Not every hero wears a cape. PLAN and PRACTICE your ESCAPE!”

“Every member of every household in our township needs to know exactly how they would get out of their home should a fire or other emergency occur, and where they would meet other household members,” Fosina said. “Practicing that plan is just as important – there is no time to hesitate in an emergency.”

The open house is also a perfect opportunity for anyone who has ever considered volunteering with one of Hopewell Valley’s volunteer fire or first aid organizations to talk to current volunteers. Hopewell Fire Department, Pennington Fire Company, Pennington First Aid Squad, and Union Fire Company all need volunteers in both emergency and non-emergency roles. Interested but can’t attend?
