Hopewell Borough is expanding road safety measures as its vibrant downtown businesses continue to attract more road activity — vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
Along a main thoroughfare, Hopewell Borough is installing “Your Speed Is” signs on Route 518 entering town heading west, West Broad / Route 654 entering town heading east, and on Louellen / Route 518 on the Borough side of the train tracks as one enters town. The foundations have already been poured and are marked with orange cones for now.
To further ensure the safety of visitors and residents, the town has installed new pedestrian crosswalks — one on East Broad Street and Maple Street and the other on East Broad directly in front of the popular farm-to-market Brick Farm Market. There will also be a rapid flashing beacon to signify to vehicles that a pedestrian is crossing, similar to the one near the Boro Bean on East Broad.
Borough residents have their own concerns about how fast vehicles drive through town. In response, one resident along with the support of the Facebook group, “Friends of Broad Street,” and the help of a local graphic designer created “Drive 25” car magnets. These magnets are meant to encourage a town-wide speed limit of 25 miles per hour, although some portions of West Broad Street remain 30 miles per hour.
