On Sunday, May 18th at 7PM, Sourland Conversancy is premiering their new film, “The Sourlands – A New Jersey Treasure” at the Off-Broad Street Theatre in Hopewell Borough.
The 25-minute film introduces viewers to the Sourlands, the largest contiguous forrest between New York City and Philadelphia, and hopes inspire a passion for protecting this natural place for current and future generations. Even for those already passionate about the Sourlands, the film will highlight why the Sourlands are so worthy of protection. Local naturalists, birders, farmers, land conservationists, and political figures (namely Congressman Rush Holt) participated in the documentary.
The film project officially started about a year ago although the concept has been incubating for a few years with the goal “to create something beautiful that would inspire people to want to take action to protect the Sourland region,” said Caroline Katmann, Executive Director.
Many dedicated hands have played a role in the making of this documentary. It was produced by the Sourland Conservancy and directed by a film committee consisting of: two Sourland Conservancy Trustees, Michael Heffler and Cliff Wilson; the Executive Director, Caroline Katmann; and one volunteer, Carol Heffler. Joe Kyle and Matt Urquhart, of Empty Bucket Studios formerly in Lambertville NJ, filmed while the production was periodically reviewed and edited by members of the Sourland Conservancy’s Board of Trustees.
The plan for the film, beyond this weekend’s showing, is to use it for educational and inspirational purposes in wide variety of venues, from the Music Festival on July 19th at the Hillsborough Country Club to meetings of municipal boards and commissions, schools, and libraries.
And the premiere is more than viewing the documentary. It will include dessert, coffee and tea. The film viewing will be followed with a panel discussion and “Q&A” on the Sourlands plus a live musical performance of original music composed for the documentary by the award-winning musician, Carol Heffler.
The amazing array of Q&A panelists include: Cliff Wilson, President of Sourland Conservancy; Michael Heffler, Trustee of Sourland Conservancy; Hannah Suthers. birder; Tyler Christensen, naturalist; Jim Amon, naturalist; and Jon McConaughy of Double Brook Farm, farmer and business man.
What can you ask at the Q&A? Katmann shared with MercerMe, “We hope that they will ask what they can do to help Save the Sourlands! We hope that they also ask how they can support our organization, which is the only organization dedicated solely to the protection of the Sourland Mountain region.”
