Statewide New Jersey Travel Ban Issued

by Mary Galioto

New Jersey’s Governor Chris Christie has issued a mandatory travel ban starting tonight at 11pm.  This ban follows the existing State of Emergency declaration and State office closures, due to the ongoing severe winter storm with heavy snow accumulations, mixed precipitation, strong winds and freezing temperatures throughout the state. This severe storm is predicted to produce hazardous travel conditions throughout the state.

According to the language in the travel ban, because traveling on snow covered roads is both dangerous and also impedes timely removal of snow acumulations from roadways throughout the state, the travel ban restricts the use of vehicles on any state or interstate highways, municipal or county roads and any access roads.

The travel restriction is mandatory with the exception of vehicles operated by public safety, sworn and civilian public safety personnel, public works vehicles, public transportation vehicles, public transportation personnel, and utility company vehicles. For the full list, click here.

The Governor’s office and the State Police have not set an end time/date for the mandatory travel ban.
