by MercerMe Staff

The Hopewell Township Police Department, along with the Pennington Fire Company, responded to the Har Sinai Temple on Pennington Road for a report of a structure fire.

The Pennington Fire Company, under the command of Chief Jim Deforte, arrived on location and observed a small area of fire near the roof area of the building. The fire was quickly extinguished by the first arriving fire apparatus from the Pennington Fire Company and the Hopewell Valley Emergency Services.

The building was partially occupied at the time of the incident, all occupants safely exited the building.

Responding agencies assisting the Pennington Fire Company included the Hopewell Fire Department, Union Fire Company, Lawrenceville Fire Company, Pennington Road Fire Company, West Trenton Fire Company, Pennington First Aid Squad, and Hopewell Valley Emergency Services. The fire was brought under control at approximately 6:03 PM. The building suffered minor damage to the exterior wall/roof area, an interior second floor classroom and smoke damage to the second floor.

This incident remains under investigation by the Hopewell Township Police Department (Detective Alexis Mirra) and the Hopewell Valley Emergency Services (Fire Official Andrew Fosina). However, it appears that the fire may have been caused by a lightning strike.
