On Saturday, March 19, The Watershed Institute will celebrate World Water Day, an international event started in 1993 by the United Nations to raise awareness of the importance of clean water for all.
The Watershed will host two free sessions, from 10am–noon and from 12:30–2:30pm, with activities both inside and outside of the Watershed Center.
Come explore microscopic critters that live in our water, discover the history of water mills in our region, and learn how to cast a fly fishing rod.
Come try a sample from the Water Bar — small cups filled with drinking water from local towns and wells – and vote on which one you think tastes the best.
During each session, visitors can play games, explore in our lab, watch eels in the Discovery Room, and more. Pick up a World Water Day passport and get it stamped along the way to earn prizes. There will be water-themed arts and crafts and hands-on projects to show how human activities affect our water.
Marina the Mermaid will have at two shows from 10:30-11:30am and from 12:30-1:30pm with watery sing-alongs, fish tales, story time and other entertainment.
Live acoustic guitar music will be performed from 10:30am-2:30pm by Greg McGarvey, a Delaware Valley musician who will play popular songs.
This year’s World Water Day theme is groundwater, a critical and hidden source of drinking water. Groundwater is also a vital resource for farming, sanitation, industry, and our ecosystems. Out of sight, under our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives.
Experts from Princeton University’s High Meadows Environmental Institute will have a giant sand tank and visitors will be able to see how water travels through various types of sand in a replica of water absorption.
At each session, our educators will lead a walk to nearby vernal pools. These will start at 11:45am and 2:15pm.
Preregistration is required. Masks are optional, please adhere to our COVID precautions. Light refreshments will be available.
