Toll Gate Grammar School Celebrates 90th Birthday

by Mary Galioto
Toll Gate Grammar School in Pennington celebrated its 90th birthday this week. To prepare for the milestone, Toll Gate first and second grade students researched the differences between life in the 1920’s with life today.

They discovered from the book “Pennington Presents her Present and Past – 1940,” found in their library that in 1924 the Pennington School was so badly overcrowded that “on approval of the voters of the District a Grammar School was erected on Main Street on ground donated by Mr. Wm. P. Howe, Sr.  This building contains 8 classrooms, an auditorium, an office and a teachers’ room and cost approximately $112, 000.  This buidling was occupied in May, 1926.”

The students shared several examples with the rest of the student body, staff and visitors at the birthday celebration this Tuesday. Students also sang the “Toll Gate Bomp” with the entire school, along with a few other songs describing why they are thankful to Toll Gate and was also a great opportunity to reinforce lessons of respect and trustworthiness.

“We are so excited to be celebrating Toll Gate’s 90th birthday,” said Toll Gate principal Tana Smith. “Thank you to all the former Gators who have given us yearbooks, pictures and anecdotes of what life was like over the years. Our school has meant so much to so many, and we’re happy to continue the tradition of a close-knit community and a quality education.”
