Trenton Bike Exchange to Celebrate Million Dollar Achievement

by MercerMe Staff

On Saturday May 12, 2018 the Trenton Bike Exchange (BEX) an all- volunteer organization, part of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Mercer County, will kick off a celebration recognizing it’s amazing achievement of raising “One Million Dollars” since opening its doors at the Capitol Plaza Shopping Center in Ewing in May, 2009.

From its inception the BEX has sought to: 1) Provide a source of low cost quality bikes for families and individuals in Mercer County, NJ, and Bucks County, PA; and 2) Raise money for the Boys & Girls Club of Trenton and Mercer County. To date, the BEX sales have exceeded $1,000,000, selling over 16,000 collected and repaired bikes. If placed end to end, these bikes would stretch 12.1 miles! Practically speaking, this also translates into funding nearly 800 kids to participate in Boys and Girls Club after school programs free of charge.

To help celebrate their $1 Million Dollar achievement, the BEX will provide “Bicycle Safety Kits” to the first 300 kids and adults who purchase a bike at the BEX during the month of May. The kits are free and have been funded through a grant awarded to the BEX by the Central Bucks Bicycle Club to implement a bicycle safety program titled “All Bikers Big and Small, Biking Safety is for All.” This grant program seeks to promote bicycle safety to local children and adults so that they recognize and enjoy the many benefits and opportunities of bicycling.

The Bicycle Safety Kits for kids will consist of the following bicycle safety gear: waterproof nylon backpack, helmet, bike reflectors, bicycle bell, and a Smart Cycling Quick Guide Booklet. Adult Safety Kits will consist of a waterproof nylon backpack, bicycle bell, reflective ankle strips, rear helmet light, rear view helmet mirror, and the Smart Cycling Quick Guide Booklet. Bicycle Safety videos and posters will also be available on the Trenton Bike Exchange Facebook page.

May is also “National Bike Month,” which is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to give biking a try. In honor of National Bike Month, the BEX will make materials and resources accessible for download by people, groups, and organizations looking to promote National Bike Month.

Come and join the Boys and Girls Club on May 12, 2018 to celebrate their many achievements and browse through their great collection of bikes. The best time to get the bike of your dreams is to come into the shop early in the Spring (like right now) and browse through our incredible stock. And be sure to bring a car that your dream bike can fit into because you’ll be walking out the door with it. Trenton Bike Exchange….”Doing good, two wheels at a time.” Click here for event details.
