“Veggie Basics” offered by Master Gardeners

by Community Contributor

Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Mercer County and the Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County will host a three-part educational series on vegetable gardening, “Veggie Basics,” featuring County Horticulturist Margaret Pickoff. The first program in the series will be “Planning a Vegetable Garden and Starting Seeds” on Saturday, February 1, 10:30 a.m. to noon, at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Mercer County.

Margaret Pickoff will be assisted by Mike Gliddon, a Rutgers Master Gardener and long-time vegetable gardener. They will focus on important considerations for any vegetable garden such as site assessment, choosing crops, amending soil, creating a basic garden plan, and starting seeds indoors. The program will include a demonstration of how to set up a simple seed starting station at home.

The next two programs in the series will be Planting and Maintaining a Garden” on Saturday, April 25 and “Harvesting Crops and End of Season Tasks” on Saturday, August 29. Whether you are a first time vegetable gardener, in need of a refresher course, or just interested in the latest tips, the Veggie Basics series is an excellent introduction to the art and science of vegetable gardening. All three Saturday morning programs will take place at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Mercer County at 1440 Parkside Avenue in Ewing, from 10:30am to Noon. Space is limited; please register by emailing [email protected].
