Join the author talk on Tuesday, March 14, 7pm as Trenton resident Donald Proffit, a former arts educator and school principal, was assigned to alternative service in Alaska as a Vietnam-era conscientious objector. He will read from his soon-to-be published memoir, Hardship Alaska, and talk about these formative years of exile, service, soul-searching, and self-discovery. Arriving in Anchorage, Alaska on Halloween night 1970 after a ten-day transcontinental journey by car—his trek replete with a breakdown on a Yukon mountain pass, a freak snow gale on the Saskatchewan prairie, rough men in roadhouses, Soviet skaters, and good Samaritans—he realized quickly that he was no longer in Allentown, Pennsylvania. His world was about to change forever. Please email [email protected] to register to receive link to program.
