Hopewell Girl Scouts rally community for hunger relief

by Community Contributor

Following is a message from one of our local Girl Scout troops:

Attention Hopewell Valley Community! Our local Girl Scout Troop needs your help! Right now in Girls Scouts we are working on the Bronze Award. The Bronze Award is the highest honor in Girl Scouts for our age group. We are working on the Agent of Change Journey Take Action Project, which is a requirement of the Bronze Award. We worked on identifying a need in our community and as a troop we are hoping to fix it.

As a troop, we noticed that many people and families struggle to buy food. We learned that there are a lot of different causes for food insecurity. Some of those families rely on their community to help them keep their cupboards stocked. Our Girl Scout troop (Troop 70260) decided to help people in need in our community. Our troop worked together to meet with our local grocery store owner and then make signs, recipe cards for meal kits, shopping lists, flyers and, booths at Pennington Quality Market.

We are hoping that our community can help gather shelf stable items based on shopping lists and recipe cards that our troop created. We partnered with Pennington Quality Market (PQM) and the Hopewell Valley Mobile Food Pantry.

Here are the steps of what you need to do if you would like to participate:

  1. There will be shopping lists with recipe cards that will be displayed in the entryway of PQM that you can take as you enter the store.
  2. Once you grab the shopping list, on it there will be a list of shelf stable items for you to shop for.
  3. Our troop has created different recipe cards to go with each shopping list. You can choose from different meal kits. There is a taco meal kit, an Italian meal kit, a stir fry meal kit, a hot cocoa meal kit, and a chili meal kit.
  4. Once done shopping for all of the items, please place everything (along with the recipe card) in a bag and place the bag in a bin that will be at the exit of Pennington Quality Market.
  5. HV Mobile Food Pantry volunteers will come pick up the shopping bags and bring them to the food pantry.

So, if you find yourself going to Pennington Quality Market over the next few weeks, we hope you consider helping out! HV Mobile Food Pantry Members will be picking up meal kit donations from PQM through mid- June. However, our project will still be going on after that. You also can drop off your meal kit donations at any time at the HV Mobile Food Pantry site at 425 South Main Street in Pennington, NJ. Please check out the HV Mobile Food Pantry website for more information about our project: https://hvymca.org/pantry/helping-hunger-program/

Thank You! Troop 70260
