Washington Crossing Reenactment Attracts Crowd On Christmas Day

by Mike Chipowsky

On Christmas afternoon, a crowd gathered to watch General George Washington, portrayed by John Godzieba, cross the Delaware River at Washington’s Crossing. For more than 70 years, this reenactment has been held on Christmas Day, weather permitting.

SEVERAL THOUSAND SPECTATORS
Several thousand spectators lined the banks of the Delaware in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania to enjoy this annual event organized by Washington Crossing Historic Park and the Friends of Washington Crossing Park.

Four replica Durham boats were used in the reenactment. Chief of the Union Fire Company Buddy Tunnicliffe said of the equipment: ”It has been an honor for the Union Fire Company and our partners, to provide our rescue boats for this event each year. We live in an area steeped with history.”

1776
As we know, on Christmas night in 1776 , General Washington Crossed the Delaware, marched to Trenton, and won the battle of Trenton in what is now known as the “TURNING POINT OF THE AMERICA REVOLUTION.“

For more events that tell this area’s story of the American Revolutionary War, history buffs can look into the Traversing the Ten Crucial Days Bus Tour, which retraces the crossing as well as American and British military engagements at Trenton, Princeton and areas in-between. There are upcoming tours January 4, 2025 and January 17, 2025.
