Hopewell Township Police Sergeant Retires After Nearly Four Decades of Service

by Mike Chipowsky

After more than 38 years in uniform, Sergeant Lincoln Karnoff of the Hopewell Township Police Department was honored with a ceremonial walkout on April 30, marking the end of a distinguished career in public service.

Surrounded by fellow officers, retirees, family members, and community well-wishers, Karnoff exited police headquarters to a round of applause and cheers. The 62-year-old sergeant shook hands with colleagues before stepping into his assigned patrol car one last time to deliver a final radio sign-off.

In his farewell transmission, Karnoff reflected on the honor of serving Hopewell Township and thanked his family for their patience during years of missed milestones and late-night calls to duty. He concluded with a tribute to his original patrol squad—Sgt. John Milewski, Patrol Officer Brooks Powell, and Patrol Officer John Collins—all of whom have passed away.

Karnoff joined the department in 1986 and was issued badge number 17. Today, the most recently hired officer carries badge number 83.

Reflecting on his career, Karnoff said, “I have had the honor to serve with the finest officers of this profession. I have seen the role of police officer change over the decades—much for the better in most cases. I have had the privilege to serve as a training officer, and I am so proud of the officers that I have had the opportunity to help mold into the officers that they are today.”

As for what’s next, Karnoff said he plans to take some time to enjoy life outside the department. “As of now, I am going to enjoy some time with my family and just see what the future holds,” he said.

His wife, Laura, added with a smile, “Oh, I can think of some things that he can do—and I just thought of one more!”

Hopewell Township Police Chief James Rosso called Karnoff’s sendoff “bittersweet.”

“We wish Lincoln and his family the very best,” Rosso said. “But the department will not be the same without him being here to keep us on the straight and narrow.”
