In case you’ve missed it, there has been a pre-primary fight among Democrats for the Mercer County Executive seat long held by Brian Hughes. Assemblyman Dan Benson, who represents the 14th District, including eastern Mercer County, challenged Hughes for the seat. Benson’s massive victory at the Democratic convention on Sunday gave him the right to be listed in the Democratic column on the ballot in November for the Executive seat. If Hughes continued to run, he would have had to be listed in a different column.
The Democratic convention is the opportunity for Democratic party representatives to determine the party’s endorsed candidate. At the convention, County Commissioner Sam Frisby nominated Benson and the nomination was seconded by Hopewell Township’s former Mayor Julie Blake. Most of the elected officials in Hopewell Valley also have announced their support for Benson. Yesterday afternoon, Hughes announced that he is leaving the race.
