Drivers Brace for More Traffic as Gas Main Project Continues

by Seth Siditsky

If you’ve been driving around Pennington Borough this week, then you have been navigating a maze of detours and no-through-traffic zones as Elizabethtown Gas continues work on a major gas main replacement project running through parts of Pennington and Hopewell Township. In response to ongoing disruptions and growing questions from the community, Borough officials released an updated letter with details about the closures and guidance for safely getting around town.

The project, which began earlier this week and is scheduled to continue through at least Saturday, July 19, includes two active construction zones—one along Pennington Road and South Main Street, and the other on West Delaware Avenue and Pennington Titusville Road, stretching from Route 31 into Hopewell Township. The work is being carried out by two crews, referred to as the steel and plastic crews, each with separate work zones.

“We know this has been a tough week for drivers,” said Borough Administrator GP Caminiti in the letter. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and want to keep residents as informed as possible.”

Caminiti emphasized that while the Borough has been working with Elizabethtown Gas to coordinate and minimize disruptions, much of the work is taking place on county roads and falls under the utility’s jurisdiction.

Key Road Closures

Among the most heavily affected routes are:

  • South Main Street, closed at multiple intersections but open to residents and local business traffic.
  • Pennington Road, closed at Search Avenue and Pennington Lawrenceville Road.
  • West Delaware Avenue, closed at Route 31 and Burd Street.

Additional closures include:

  • E. Welling Ave & S. Main St.
  • Pennington Lawrenceville Rd & Blackwell Rd
  • Vannoy Ave & Ingleside Ave
  • Baldwin St & E. Welling Ave
  • Ingleside Ave & Burd St
  • S. Timberlane Dr & Pennington Titusville Rd

“No thru traffic” signs are posted at the entrance to South Main Street from Delaware Avenue, though essential services—including emergency vehicles, garbage/recycling trucks, and deliveries—are permitted to pass.

The Borough urged residents to use the traffic signal at Route 31 and Delaware Avenue when entering or exiting Pennington, and to avoid turning left from Ingleside Avenue onto Route 31, citing safety concerns.

Schools, Library Remain Accessible

Access to Pennington Library and both Hopewell Valley Central High School and Timberlane Middle School remains open via Dublin Road. Residents can also continue reaching their homes, although drivers should plan for delays and rerouted traffic patterns throughout the work zone.

Support for Local Businesses

While navigating closures has been frustrating for many, Borough officials are urging the community to continue supporting local businesses, particularly those located along South Main Street.

“Local businesses are open during this construction period, and your support matters,” the Borough noted in its message. “A thriving community depends on us showing up for each other.”

Weekly updates from Elizabethtown Gas are expected to continue as the work progresses. More permanent updates to infrastructure and gas line reliability are anticipated as the outcome of this disruption.
