Clever Corvids: Understanding the World’s Smartest Birds

April 11 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Free

For Adults and Families with Children

We have always wondered what intelligent life from other planets would look like, but what about in our own backyard? What are some examples of non-human intelligence we come across every day? Are some animals smarter than others? Corvids – birds like ravens, crows, and jays – display some extraordinary markers of intelligence among birds, and even other animals!  Come learn about these amazing birds, take a hike to look for them out on the Reserve, and just like the corvids, think your way through a multi-step problem as you build a fun contraption.

A Beyond The Page program in partnership between The Pennington Public Library and The Watershed Institute.

About Our Presenter: Elizabeth Hinckley is a staff educator at The Watershed Institute. She is passionate about teaching and nature, and loves helping others develop connections to the natural world. Whether on The Watershed Reserve in Pennington or at schools throughout the area, she can be found sharing the joy of science, nature, and conservation with students of all ages, particularly regarding issues around water conservation and ecology.

This event is part of our 2026 Beyond the Page – an initiative designed to broaden our imaginations and understanding of our world,
our neighbors, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book.  The featured book Exhalation contains nine stunningly original, provocative, and poignant stories, where author Ted Chiang tackles some of humanity’s oldest questions, along with new quandaries only he could imagine. Please visit PenningtonLibrary.org/2026BeyondThePage for a full calendar of events and more information.
