Van Gogh: A Journey through His Paintings and Their Inspiration (virtual)

March 22, 2023 @ 7:00 pm

Van Gogh did not begin painting until his late twenties, and most of his better-known works were produced during his final two years. Producing more than 2000 artworks consisting of around 900 paintings and 1100 drawings and sketches, along with over 2000 letters (mostly between Van Gogh and his brother Theo), historians are able to discern the man whose works are so admired today and are able to explore the mystery of his death. In many of his letters to Theo, Van Gogh wrote about the artists he admired. However, his greatest tribute to these artists was by absorbing their ideas and depictions in his own paintings and drawings. His magnificent versions are so interesting when shown juxtaposed with these admired artists’ works, Millet, Monet, Manet, Rembrandt, Delacroix, Cezanne, Seurat, plus others.

Presented on Wednesday, March 22, 7pm by Jeanne Johnson, docent at Princeton University Art Museum. Please email [email protected] to register to receive link to program.
