Older adults and low- to moderate-income residents in the Hopewell Valley and throughout Mercer County can receive free tax preparation assistance this tax season through AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, a nationwide volunteer program offering expert help with federal and state returns.

Tax-Aide sites are now open across New Jersey through April 15. The program, run by AARP Foundation in partnership with the IRS, has provided free tax assistance to more than 82 million people nationwide since 1968. Participation is open to all eligible taxpayers; AARP membership is not required.
Local residents can access services at sites in Hopewell Valley and nearby Mercer County communities, with multiple assistance options depending on location.
“Tax-Aide helps older adults get the refunds and credits they’ve earned, free of charge and with no hidden fees,” said AARP New Jersey State Director Chris Widelo. “For many on fixed incomes, that refund can make a real difference in covering everyday essentials, like food, utilities and medicine.”
During the 2025 tax season, nearly 33,000 New Jersey returns were completed through the program, generating more than $24 million in refunds, according to AARP. Nationally, volunteers helped secure more than $1.3 billion in refunds and credits last year.
Trained, IRS-certified volunteers provide assistance to taxpayers with low to moderate income, with particular focus on older adults. Volunteers are updated annually on changes to the tax code, including the federal senior bonus deduction of up to $6,000 for individuals age 65 and older, or $12,000 for couples filing jointly.
