Hopewell Yard Becomes Wildlife Sanctuary

by Community Contributor

On Thursday, July 25 from 7pm to 8pm, Hopewell’s own Kirsi Bhasin will share her three-year journey of transforming her property into a haven for native plants and wildlife. This virtual lecture, part of the Thursday Night Nature series, is presented by Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve.

Over three years, Bhasin removed seven truckloads of invasive plants and more than forty trees, only one of which was healthy, to create a sanctuary brimming with over 1,000 native plant species. Her efforts have turned her property into a refuge for local wildlife, including some rare and endangered species.

Bhasin, recipient of the Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve’s 2024 Land Ethics Symposium Award for Individual Best Effort, is completing the Rutgers environmental steward program and serves on Hopewell Township’s environmental commission.

The program fee is $15, with a 20% discount for members who enter their code at checkout. All lectures will be held virtually using Zoom and will be recorded, available for a short time to everyone who registers.
