Libraries Invite Community to Honor Martin Luther King Jr. Through Acts of Kindness

by Community Contributor

As communities across Mercer County prepare to honor the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Mercer County Library System is inviting residents to take part in a simple but meaningful act of service: writing letters and creating handmade cards for homebound seniors.

From Monday, January 12 through Friday, February 6, individuals, families, and groups of all ages are encouraged to stop by any Mercer County Library branch to create messages for Meals on Wheels patrons throughout the county. The initiative expands Dr. King’s annual Day of Service into a four-week opportunity to connect with neighbors who may be isolated or homebound.

“In coming together to support seniors in Mercer County, we are working to build the ‘beloved community’ that Dr. King so eloquently envisioned,” Mercer County Executive Dan Benson said. “A small gesture on our part can mean so much to Meals on Wheels recipients, many of whom have limited mobility and fewer opportunities to connect with others.”

All supplies needed for card-making and letter-writing will be available at all nine branches of the Mercer County Library System. Participants may stop by during regular library hours, and no prior registration is required.

Library officials encourage participants to bring their creativity and compassion to help brighten the days of local seniors — and to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service rooted in empathy and connection.
