Local environmental leaders to talk about plastic May 21

Princeton University Director of Environmental Studies and Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space (FoHVOS) Board President Dr. Dan Rubenstein will join a panel of other local environmental leaders in a virtual panel discussion May 21 to dig in to the documentary The Story of Plastic.

This event is presented by the Hopewell Valley Regional School District (HVRSD), which has been working to reduce plastic waste in the schools. Its district-wide Green Team has been championing sustainability efforts including a plastic straw ban and a dramatic reduction in disposable water bottle use. To augment its e-learning initiatives, HVRSD welcomes the community to join the effort through this presentation.

The available discussion seats had previously been filled, but HVRSD added 100 seats this morning so that more community members can view the film and participate in the follow up conversation. Click here to RSVP to this free event. Attendees will receive a link to stream the film 48 hours before the live Q&A discussion. The link will be delivered to you at the email address you use to RSVP. On May 21 at 4pm, participants will reconvene on Google Meet for a panel discussion about the film. A separate link will be sent for that event.

The Story of Plastic documentary takes a sweeping look at the man-made crisis of plastic pollution and the worldwide effect it has on the health of our planet and the people who inhabit it. Spanning three continents, the film illustrates the ongoing catastrophe: fields full of garbage, veritable mountains of trash, rivers and seas clogged with waste, and skies choked with the poisonous emissions from plastic production and processing. With engaging original animation, archival industry footage beginning in the 1930s, and first-person accounts of the unfolding emergency, the film distills a complex problem that is increasingly affecting the planet’s and its residents’ well-being.
