LTE: Thanks to the Hopewell Fire Dept, my life was saved during Ida

To the Editor:

Coming home on the night of the storm, Ida, I got to the bridge coming into Hopewell thinking with relief that I was almost home. And then not seeing how deep the water was, my car stalled in the middle of the bridge.

Water started seeping in – rising up to my knees. I called 911 and was terrified and didn’t know what to do. I pushed the door open and saw another woman several feet away. We joined hands and began to walk through the almost chest high flowing water.

Suddenly a man appeared in a car next to us and said, “Hold on the the door handles and walk with me as I drive.” Who was that person who helped save me?

Then from the opposite direction came a Hopewell fireman who said “Open the door and quickly jump in.” He had to drive all around until he could get back to the station.

I am so grateful to all of you in the Fire Department for saving my life and the warmth of your caring while I stayed at the station all night. You gave of yourselves and kept giving all through that storm in rescuing others. You are truly brave and caring people. My heart thanks you.
