Mercer County Offering Array of Government Activities in April

Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes invites residents to learn about Mercer County through activities at various locations during National County Government Month in April.

“Mercer County has programs for citizens of all ages and interests, and I encourage our residents to take advantage of the services and events countywide in celebration of County Government Month,” said Hughes.

The Mercer County Park Commission Naturalists are offering a variety of programs in April. The Tulpehaking Nature Center will offer a beginner birdwatching series that will help you hone your skills while studying in the Abbott Marshlands. The Birding 101 Series will take place on Saturdays, April 1, 8, 15 and 22 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and will be led by local expert Bill “Birdman” Pitman. Participants will use binoculars and identify birds by shape, size, behavior and habitat. This workshop is $5 per person or $15 for the series if paid in full, and is appropriate for teens and adults. Register at 609-888-3218 or e-mail [email protected]. Birding continues on Sunday, April 9, where the Park Commission will lead a Grassland Bird Survey at Mercer Meadows, 1 to 3 p.m. For location, email [email protected].

Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello is taking her passport service on the road when she will conduct a Passport Event & Information session Tuesday, April 4, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Pennington Borough Hall, 30 N. Main St., Pennington. Reservations are recommended. 609-989-6473.

The Mercer County Division of Consumer Affairs will share valuable Consumer Awareness tips at an education program at the Lawrence Senior Center on Wednesday, April 5, 2:30 p.m. The Senior Center is on Darrah Lane, Lawrence. Consumer Affairs also will have a representative on hand at County Connection on Monday, April 10, noon to 3 p.m., to assist consumers who have questions about fraud, unreliable contractors, unsatisfactory business service and more. Fraud Prevention Talk

The Mercer County Park Commission joins with partners D&R Canal State Park and Friends for the Abbott Marshlands to recognize central New Jersey and its contributions to the growth of America. On Saturday, April 8, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., walk along the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath with historian Michael Skelly. Meet at the Northbound Overlook on Interstate 295, one mile north of Bordentown. Stroll the canal and explore its history. Also Saturday, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., hear from archeologist Jim Lee from the Hunter Research Group. In this program, you will learn how construction of the Tulpehaking Nature Center respected this unique and historic site of the Abbot Marshlands. Jim will discuss the results of the required archeological excavation, explain the origin of the Native American features identified, and show images of the artifacts recovered. The Tulpehaking Nature Center is located at 157 Westcott Ave., Hamilton. On Sunday, April 9, from noon to 4 p.m., tour the historic 1708 Watson House.  Daughters of the American Revolution will conduct half-hour tours of this newly reopened pre-Revolutionary building. The Mercer County Improvement Authority on Saturday, April 8, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dempster Fire Training School will be collecting your household hazardous waste and unwanted electronics. Accepted materials include aerosol cans, used motor oil, propane gas tanks, pesticides, herbicides, car batteries, paint thinning, oil based paints, stains, varnishes, gasoline, antifreeze, driveway sealer, insect repellants, mercury, fluorescent and CFL bulbs, televisions, computers, printers, fax machines and microwave ovens,  Not accepted are heating oil, latex paint, explosives or munitions, railroad ties, asbestos, air conditioners, oxygen tanks, radioactive materials. 609-278-8086 or www.mcianj.org.

Do you want to learn CPR techniques but don’t need an official completion course card? County Connection is offering Family & Friends CPR Training course on Wednesday, April 19, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Mercer County Connection, Hamilton. Participants will be taught how to perform CPR on adults, children and infants and how to help people who are choking. 609-989-9800.

Mercer County Horticulturist Barbara Bromley of Rutgers Cooperative Extension can solve your plant problems. Join Barbara on Thursday, April 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at County Connection. Bring a sample of insect, weed, diseased flower or branch to have your mystery solved. 609-989-9800.

On Saturday, April 22, Wildlife Center Friends will be hosting an Earth Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Wildlife Center. Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler’s office will hold a medicine collection drop-off event Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mercer County Administration Building, 640 S. Broad St., Trenton. Mercer County residents can easily dispose of unused and expired prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications. Hypodermic needles or liquid solutions not accepted. All branches of the Mercer County Library System are offering a variety of programs for people all ages, birth to senior citizens.
