We are excited to announce that Kelly Beamon has joined MercerMe as our first paid editor. This marks a pivotal moment in our mission to deepen our community impact through robust, insightful journalism.
Founded in December 2013 by Mary Galioto, MercerMe has grown from a one-person operation to a fundamental source of news in Hopewell Valley. Since then, Mary has served as a volunteer in various roles including editor, publisher, and occasionally the only reporter, supporting the publication’s growth through community contributions and advertising partnerships.
Kelly Beamon brings a wealth of experience to MercerMe. Starting her journalism career at The Trenton Times in 1993, she moved through significant roles at Dow Jones, Time Inc., and Nielsen, honing her expertise in architectural journalism with leading magazines like Architectural Record, Interior Design, and This Old House. Kelly’s skills extend beyond reporting—she excels in team management and enhancing reader engagement.
“I’m excited Kelly will lead the charge in enhancing our coverage of local events and issues,” said Mary, ”as we dive deeper into community-centric journalism.
“I’m thrilled to return to local journalism, where I can use my skills to serve my neighborhood,” Kelly says. “I’m ready to roll up my sleeves to ensure our reporting not only informs but empowers people.”
Following Mary’s initial leadership, Amie Rukenstein volunteered as editor from 2019 until spring 2024, dedicating herself to maintaining MercerMe’s course while Mary focused on funding, partnerships, community support and engagement, and technological improvements. With Amie’s departure earlier this year, Mary resumed the role of editor for six months while searching for the right candidate.
“Bringing Kelly on board is a crucial step toward our sustainability,” Mary explains. “It’s necessary that we transition from relying on volunteer efforts to a funded model to secure our future.”
Community participation has been critical in reaching this stage. With a recent grant and continued local business and reader support, MercerMe is set to broaden its engagement and offerings.
As we tackle the ongoing challenges of sustainability, we are grateful for every contribution. Kelly’s start is not just a new chapter for MercerMe but an invitation for more profound community involvement in our collective narrative.
