John Walsh, owner of Walsh Senior Solutions in Pennington, had a problem: he needed to move his parents. Twice.
“When I helped my parents through their moves, I dealt with 12 separate companies to essentially handle each individual component of vacating a house of 20 years. Not only is the health side a big component, there is the financial side, moving companies, an estate sale company, local consignment stores, and then calling Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and Homefront – seeing what they will accept for donations and how you get the items there. How do we go about figuring out what of their current possessions can fit in a smaller space?”
So Walsh decided to form a company to consolidate these services for anyone who needs it.
“We serve a very important task in all of this. Instead of you having to relay all of this stuff to 12 separate companies, I essentially launched a comprehensive solution to help families of all ages who are decluttering and moving.”
Unpacking the Solution
Walsh provides an invaluable resource for families during the moving process. By taking on so much more than just moving boxes, he reduces the stress of managing a move, especially for adult children assisting their parents with downsizing.
“Everybody thinks the move is over when the movers drop off all the boxes. The reality is you are essentially on the 15 yard line. You still have to get it all out of the boxes, get it where it needs to be, set everything up and get rid of all the moving boxes. Most moving companies don’t do that. We do that.”
Walsh Senior Solutions is one-stop shopping for your move. The company specializes in downsizing. But no move is too small. John describes his ideal customer as college age and above.
Each move is different. The Walsh in-home consultation is free and he maps out your move. One of the most important tools he creates is a timeline for the homeowner. Walshmeticulously plans when and where your possessions will go. Things are categorized. Donations are arranged. He gets dumpsters, provides moving trucks, and coordinates all other services.
Floor plans are created to map out how clients’r furniture will be arranged in theirnew place. His company will even set up new belongings in anew home. The bed is made, the dishes are in the cabinets, and the client is are ready to live in their new home on the day they arrive. Walsh literally has created a comprehensive solution to the complexity of moving.
Walsh grew up locally in Princeton and attended Princeton Day School and then the Lawrenceville School. After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania. Walsh found himself in Manhattan working at a series of large insurance companies. As he explains it, “I never got those good vibes. I had this feeling I wasn’t helping the people I should be helping.”
“Then, in a span of 15 months, I helped my parents downsize twice. First was from a home of 20 years with a lot of possessions and a lot of areas to keep contents. I helped them move to a more manageable townhouse…and then with both of their health deteriorating, I helped them transition to a senior living community, in Media PA.”
“I have seen the stress and that delicate balance of helping your parents but also getting some pushback from them. The reason I launched this business is to use my skills in organization and making things more efficient, removing obstacles, and takingstress off people in various situations.”
Walsh turned his experience into a business that prides itself on the value provided to the customer. “The people my company helps can be in their 60’s, 70’s, 80’s or 90’s. Although it is called Walsh Senior Solutions, we are helping a family in their 40’s right now. It is really a similar process regardless of your age. But it can get more stressful and more emotional the older the homeowner gets.”
“At the end of each day I am very proud of the work my team does on behalf of families that help them navigate this very delicate and difficult stage in their parents’ lives. We help families who are moving but we also help those who are decluttering and clearing out certain areas of their home.”
