Ongoing Gas Line Work and Paving Continues to Prompt Road Closures

by Seth Siditsky

Road closures in and around Pennington have become a familiar sight in recent weeks as Elizabethtown Gas continues work to install a new gas main throughout the area and summer paving projects are underway. The gas line project, which began a few weeks ago, is expected to continue for several more weeks and has affected travel on multiple streets in both Pennington Borough and Hopewell Township.

Borough officials say the gas line replacement is necessary infrastructure work but acknowledge the ongoing inconvenience for residents and drivers. The project is being carried out by Elizabethtown Gas, which has the authority to lay mains beneath public roads—including those under Mercer County jurisdiction. While the Borough does not control the planning or timeline, officials say they are working closely with the utility and the County to help minimize disruption.

“Elizabethtown Gas has been considerate and helpful, and we will be receiving weekly updates from them,” said Pennington Borough Administrator GP Caminiti in a message to residents. “We will post updates as soon as we can to keep all of you informed and able to plan accordingly.”

The most recent detour update affects East Curlis Avenue and South Main Street, where the intersection is currently closed at both South Main and Abey Drive. Access remains open for residents, emergency vehicles, deliveries, and garbage and recycling services.

Drivers are advised to use the traffic light at Route 31 and Delaware Avenue to enter or exit Pennington. For safety reasons, officials urge residents to avoid turning left onto Route 31 from Ingleside Avenue.

Hopewell Township has also sent out notices about paving on Denow Road that will prompt closures to through traffic as the road will be resurfaced between Wellington Drive and Van Brunt Road. That work is expected to start Aug. 4 and should be completed by Aug. 8. All traffic should follow the posted detour route.
