Pennington Borough officials have issued updated guidance as Elizabethtown Gas continues installation of a new gas main through the borough, prompting road closures across key intersections and residential streets.
The utility project, which began earlier this month, has temporarily restricted through-traffic on portions of South Main Street, Pennington Road, Pennington Lawrenceville Road, and several connecting side streets. The Borough emphasized that it has no authority over the planning or timing of the project, which is largely under the jurisdiction of Mercer County and Elizabethtown Gas.
“We have been working very closely with Elizabethtown Gas to minimize disruptions to our traffic flows and residents, and they have been considerate and helpful,” Borough Administrator GP Caminiti wrote in a public notice. “We will be receiving weekly updates from them and will post them as soon as we can to keep all of you informed and able to plan accordingly.”
Detour 1 (Through July 28)
The following roads remain closed to through traffic:
- Pennington Road, South Main Street, and Pennington Lawrenceville Road
- Intersection of South Main Street and Delaware Avenue (no thru traffic signage)
- Pennington Lawrenceville Road at both Pennington Road and Blackwell Road
- South Main Street at East Welling Avenue
- Pennington Road at Search Avenue
- West Delaware Avenue at Burd Street
- Vannoy Avenue at Ingleside Avenue
- Baldwin Street at East Welling Avenue
- Ingleside Avenue at Burd Street
While the roads are closed to through traffic, residents are still able to access their homes. Emergency vehicles, garbage and recycling collection, and deliveries are also able to proceed.
Detour 2 (Begins July 28–29)
Work will shift toward South Main Street’s “Boulevard” section near Toll Gate Grammar School:
- South Main Street closed at the entrance to the Boulevard near 413 S Main St
- East Welling Avenue closed at South Main Street
- Road closed to through traffic at East Welling Avenue and Baldwin Street
- Closure at Toll Gate Grammar School’s entrance and exit
Residents living at odd-numbered addresses from 413 through 325 South Main Street may use East Welling Avenue for parking during this period. Emergency and service access will remain open throughout the project.
Safety Reminder
Borough officials are urging residents to use the traffic light at Route 31 and Delaware Avenue when entering or exiting town during the closures. Drivers are asked to avoid turning left onto Route 31 from Ingleside Avenue for safety reasons.
