Rabid raccoon found in West Amwell

by Community Contributor

The Hunterdon County Department of Health is notifying residents that a raccoon tested positive for rabies on May 1. The raccoon was found in the area of Gulick Rd.

If you possibly had any contact with this animal, notify your Primary Care Physician immediately, or go to the Capital Health Emergency Room to discuss whether you need post-exposure treatment.

Remember: don’t touch stray animals at any time. It may not be apparent that the animal is infected, and rabies might get transferred by their saliva.

All animals should be vaccinated against rabies. This includes cats, dogs and livestock. Rabies vaccines can be obtained through any veterinarian or through municipal rabies clinics. The Hopewell Township Health Department will next be offering rabies vaccinations on November 4, 9am- noon, at the Hopewell Township Public Works building.

Mercer County has more information about rabies here.

For found or lost pets, call Hopewell Township’s Animal Control Officer at [email protected] or 609-537-0278 during regular business hours. After hours, call the non-emergency police line at 609-737-3100.
