Hours before the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975 Thy’s family boarded a South Vietnamese Naval Destroyer, The Chi Lang 2 (HQ08) in which her uncle was the captain of. The US Naval 7th Fleet escorted their ship and other South Vietnamese Navy ships from Vietnam to Subic Bay, Philippines. Immediately after arriving at Subic Bay, they were then transferred onto a cargo ship, the USNS Sgt. Truman Kimbro, which transported Thy’s family along with thousands of other Vietnamese refugees to a temporary refugee camp in Guam. After a month in Guam, they were flown to a refugee camp in Ft. Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. Three months later a church in East Brunswick, NJ sponsored Thy’s family and they moved in with their sponsor family (The Mooney’s). Thy was just a year-old traveling this journey with her family to escape communism. Today Thy Cavagnaro is an accomplished businesswoman who dedicates her time honoring Vietnam veterans, and works to educate our youth in a new appreciation for their country and for those who defend it. Rolling Thunder®, Inc National is honored to introduce Thy Cavagnaro as this year’s featured speaker.
