Sadly, the opinion pages of the local papers lately have been rife with personal attacks against Hopewell Township community members serving on the Planning Board, Zoning Board, and the Historical Preservation Commission. As a direct recipient of these personal attacks, I’d like to introduce myself to the community and explain why I volunteered to serve on the Planning Board, why I’m qualified to serve, and to encourage others to do the same.

Letter to the Editor: Ratables? Really? Municipal leaders must understand the trap of the ratables chase. It should be obvious by now that additional residential development, which attracts families with children, drives up tax rates because the high cost of educating those children is not remotely matched by the tax revenue from those homes.

After watching the Hopewell Township Committee meeting on Monday, June 11, I would like to say that I hope more residents of our community will attend or watch a meeting. They can be seen on Comcast channel 95 and Verizon channel 30. The meetings are the second and fourth Monday of the month.

Letter to the Editor: Another Call for Civility at Township Committee Meetings
To the Editor:
When the usual suspects, the predictable parade of detractors, approach the podium during public comment, to talk intentionally at cross purposes to imply the committee is doing other than their absolute best work serving the township, never once have I heard those who take umbrage with their words shout out one word of protest while they are speaking.

To the Editor: Hopewell Township’s Public Works Department is responsible for clearing brush throughout 58 square miles of our primarily rural Township. Two pickups are scheduled each year, in May and October. In most years, this schedule works well and our Public Works crews are able to do their jobs quickly and efficiently. But this has not been a normal year.

How often do we get to do good while having a blast? Pretty rare but there is an opportunity coming up.
Most of your readers will know and appreciate the Sourland Mountain – in many ways it is one of the defining features of our area, a green gem, rich in history as well as an invaluable ecosystem.

Hopewell Township Committee supporters use simple-sounding arguments. They say that the Township Committee works hard (mostly true); are volunteers (nearly true, they receive a small, taxable salary); that the township will be healthier by meeting its affordable housing obligations (unquestionably true); and that the affordable housing alternatives were too expensive or impractical (almost certainly not true).
