Thunder Drop Series to State College After Weekend of Highs and Lows

by Community Contributor

The Trenton Thunder gave fans a dramatic mix of fireworks and frustration over the Fourth of July weekend—walking off one win in thrilling fashion before dropping back-to-back games to the State College Spikes, including a lopsided 18–0 loss on Sunday.

Friday: Pork Roll Walk-Off Sparks Celebration

On Independence Day, the Thunder played as the Trenton Pork Roll and delivered their fifth straight win in front of a sellout crowd of 6,817, edging the Frederick Keys 5–4 in walk-off fashion.

Danny Corona led the charge with a three-hit night, including the game-winning two-RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Aaron Whitley stole three bases to extend his league lead and scored the team’s first run. RBI contributions from Mike Whooley and Aaron Graeber helped Trenton build an early lead before the Keys rallied in the top of the ninth. But the Pork Roll staged one final comeback to send fans home happy.

Saturday: Thunder Fall in Sudden Death

Trenton’s five-game streak came to an end Saturday night as the State College Spikes evened the series with a 4–3 victory in sudden death. The Thunder led 3–1 going into the seventh, thanks to RBIs from Whooley, Graeber, and Harry Genth. But the Spikes tied it up, and in the Futures League’s sudden-death extra frame, pushed across the winning run on a bases-loaded walk.

Sunday: Spikes Erupt for 12-Run Eighth in Rout

The series concluded Sunday afternoon with a blowout, as State College overwhelmed the Thunder 18–0. Trenton managed to keep things relatively close early, but the Spikes broke the game wide open with a 12-run eighth inning. The Thunder were unable to answer offensively and dropped the series two games to one.
