Trenton Walks will continue its series of guided outings this fall with programs exploring pollinator meadows at Cadwalader Park and the work of the Delaware River Basin Commission, including a walk across the Delaware River.
The upcoming walks combine outdoor recreation with discussions about the region’s environment, history and natural resources.
Pollinator Meadow at Cadwalader Park
The first walk will be held Friday, Sept. 18, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Cadwalader Park in Trenton.
Jenn Rogers, executive director of Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space, and Ed Carrington of Outdoor Equity Alliance will lead a discussion and walk focused on “Meadows Matter.”
Beginning at the Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie, Rogers and Carrington will discuss the history and ecological importance of pollinator gardens and meadows, including their roles in reducing flooding, storing carbon and supporting biodiversity. Carrington will also discuss Outdoor Equity Alliance’s work to establish additional pollinator meadows in Trenton.
The approximately one-mile walk will begin and end at the Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie Mansion. Participants should enter Cadwalader Park at 299 Parkside Ave. Free parking is available near the mansion.
The walk is co-hosted by the Cadwalader Park Alliance, Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space, Outdoor Equity Alliance, Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie and Trenton Walks.
Behind the scenes at the Delaware River Basin Commission
A second walk on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. will take participants behind the scenes at the Delaware River Basin Commission in West Trenton before heading outdoors for a walk along and across the Delaware River.
Participants will meet DRBC representatives at the commission’s offices at 25 Cosey Road in Ewing Township for an overview of the agency’s work managing and protecting the Delaware River Basin. The program will include a tour of an on-site laboratory, an opportunity to meet water-quality scientists and a look at programs used to monitor the health of the basin and emerging contaminants.
The group will then carpool to the Delaware & Raritan Canal parking area near Bernhard Drive and River Road and walk across the Delaware River to Pennsylvania using the bicycle and pedestrian bridge alongside Interstate 295.
The approximately 1.8-mile walk will return along the D&R Canal Towpath. Participants will learn about the history of the area and connections to the Delaware and Lehigh Canal Trail and other Delaware River crossings.
