High water levels in the Delaware River have forced the cancellation of the river crossing portion of the annual Christmas Day re-enactment featuring Gen. George Washington and his troops, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection announced.

Washington Crossing State Park in Titusville, Mercer County will proceed with a planned history narration at 12:30pm on Tuesday December 25 along the river bank and staff in period clothing will provide public interpretation at the Nelson House. Additional activities will be available at Washington Crossing Historic Park in nearby Washington Crossing, Pa.

The annual re-enactment recalls the December 25, 1776, crossing of the Delaware during the War for Independence, which led to strategic victories the next day in Trenton and subsequent victories at Assunpink Creek and Princeton.
