Utility Work to Affect Roads in Hopewell Borough and Township

by Seth Siditsky

Drivers traveling through the Hopewell area will encounter ongoing water-main construction in Hopewell Borough this week, with another utility project expected to begin next week on Hopewell-Pennington Road in Hopewell Township.

New Jersey American Water will continue work on West Broad Street in Hopewell Borough during the week of Sept. 28, while Elizabethtown Gas is expected to begin work Oct. 5 along a stretch of Hopewell-Pennington Road between Crusher Road and the Hopewell Borough line.

Both projects are expected to affect traffic, although in different ways.

Water work continues on West Broad Street

In Hopewell Borough, New Jersey American Water is continuing its project to install a new water main along West Broad Street.

Work is planned Monday through Friday, weather permitting. Traffic is expected to remain open in both directions, but motorists could encounter intermittent single-lane closures with flaggers around construction areas.

Businesses along West Broad Street will remain open and accessible during the work.

NJ American Water has also completed the third phase of its meter pit upgrade and replacement program, according to the Borough, meaning work will now be largely concentrated in the West Broad Street area.

This week’s work includes continuing to switch over and replace individual water service connections. Residents may experience brief interruptions in water service or changes in water pressure as their connections are completed.

The work can also cause temporarily discolored or cloudy water. The Borough said customers experiencing discoloration should run cold water for a few moments until it clears.

NJ American Water is notifying residents individually when work on their service connection is scheduled.

Gas work coming to Hopewell-Pennington Road

Another utility project is expected to begin next week just outside the Borough.

Hopewell Township announced that Elizabethtown Gas expects to begin utility work Oct. 5 along County Route 654, Hopewell-Pennington Road, between Crusher Road and the Hopewell Borough line.

The work is expected to continue through the end of the year.

Motorists should expect a single-lane closure in the work area, according to the Township.

Commercial truck traffic will be prohibited through the construction area and directed to detour using Route 31 north to Route 518 east and into Hopewell Borough.

The Township advised motorists to allow additional travel time and use caution around the work zone.
