Downtown Pennington has a new place for readers to browse, linger and discover their next favorite book.
After months of building a following through pop-up events, Whispering Pines Bookstore officially opened its permanent location Saturday at 8 N. Main St., welcoming customers with a ribbon-cutting celebration, complimentary coffee and pastries from The Beagle’s Brew, and a steady stream of community members eager to explore the shop.
The independent bookstore offers a curated selection of books across a variety of genres, including children’s titles, along with gifts and merchandise such as tote bags, mugs, T-shirts, wine glasses, baseball caps and book sleeves.
From pop-up to permanent
For owner Jamie Ensley, opening a brick-and-mortar bookstore wasn’t something that happened overnight.
Unable to immediately open a storefront, Ensley began by hosting pop-up events throughout the area, introducing readers to Whispering Pines while partnering with other local businesses.
“I wasn’t able to go from nothing to having a brick-and-mortar right away,” Ensley said. “I felt like that was a way that I could do it, but the biggest inspiration for doing the pop-up was that I wanted to promote other small businesses.”
Now, with a permanent home in Pennington, she said the response from the community has been encouraging.
A Pennington resident for six years, Ensley said she believed the borough was missing something many small towns should have.
“I really feel like every town deserves to have a bookstore,” she said. “I really felt like we were missing that in our community.”
A carefully curated selection
Unlike larger retailers, Ensley said Whispering Pines focuses on carefully selecting books based not only on the stories themselves but also on the authors behind them.
“I just love the idea of an independent bookstore because we really care about what we’re doing and we really care about the community,” she said. “Every independent bookstore is going to have a different selection, and that makes us all unique in our own ways.”
The shop’s intimate size is intentional, she said.
“We’re a very small space, but I feel that it’s cozy,” Ensley said. “We can offer a space that’s safe and comfortable, and just a place for people to be in and breathe and relax.”
Building community
While books are at the heart of the business, Ensley said one of the unexpected rewards of launching Whispering Pines has been the relationships she’s built with customers.
“I met so many people doing the pop-ups, and that has probably been my favorite part of it,” she said.
Now that the bookstore has settled into its permanent location, she hopes to expand that sense of community by hosting events and gatherings for readers.
Saturday’s grand opening included a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by members of the Pennington Borough Council and Mayor Jim Davy, marking the beginning of Whispering Pines’ next chapter as one of downtown Pennington’s newest small businesses.
