Pennington Public Library once again will be presenting a wide variety of programs centered on one book, thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. The library’s selected book is Circe, by Madeline Miller. Free copies of the book are being distributed at the library.
The captivating novel traces the journey of one of Greek mythology’s minor goddesses, and lends itself to exciting programming with its themes of self-actualization, societal marginalization, art and antiquities, family relationships, and female empowerment, all seasoned with some herbal potions! Participants may be led to consider the many ways in which Greek mythology retains relevance in our contemporary world.
Events for the NEA Big Read will kick off on February 25, 2024, with award-winning author Daniel Mendelsohn, who wrote of his own personal odyssey in his book, An Odyssey: A Father, a Son, and an Epic. Our closing event will be an author talk with Madeline Miller herself. In between, the library will partner with local organizations to present programs such as foraging wild edibles, an introduction to weaving with Twist Knitting and Spinning, star-gazing with the Amateur Astronomers Association of Princeton, and cultivating herbs with Master Gardeners of Mercer County, just to name a few of the planned activities.
