Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler announced a short-term partnership with Hyundai USA to offer free steering wheel locks for area Hyundai owners. These particular vehicles have become common targets for thieves after nationwide social media videos incited a rise in vehicle thefts.
If the vehicle qualifies, obtaining a free steering wheel lock is easy. Residents need only make an appointment with the Sheriff’s Programs Unit at 640 South Broad Street in Trenton, present a valid New Jersey driver’s license, and provide proof of owning a certain Hyundai model on their vehicle registration.
Eligible Hyundai models are:
2018-2022 Accent
2011-2022 Elantra
2013-2020 Elantra GT
2013-2014 Genesis Coupe
2018-2022 Kona
2020-2021 Palisade
2013-2022 Santa Fe
2013-2018 Santa Fe Sport
2019 Santa Fe XL
2011-2019 Sonata
2011-2022 Tucson
2012-2017 Veloster
2019-2021 Veloster
2020-2021 Venue
“Steering wheel locks, if used consistently and properly, will provide another layer of security to prevent a car from being stolen,” said Sheriff Kemler. While nothing is 100% when it comes to outsmarting car thieves, we know that the more difficult you make it, the less likely you are to be a victim of automobile theft,” noted Kemler.
Please note that steering wheel lock supplies are limited, so residents are encouraged to act promptly.
