For the first time, Columbia Avenue in Hopewell Borough will be closed to traffic on Halloween night to create a pedestrian-only “safe zone” for trick-or-treaters.
During Thursday’s Borough Council meeting, Councilwoman Debra Stuhler announced the plan, developed with Borough police, fire, and emergency services. The closure will take place on Thursday, Oct. 31, beginning at 5:30 p.m., and will allow children and families to enjoy Halloween in a car-free area.
“It’s something new we’re trying this year,” Stuhler said. “The idea is to make it safer for our kids and families and to make it fun.” She noted that emergency vehicles will still have access and that residents will be notified in advance about parking restrictions and detours.
The Borough will also set up a community tent on Columbia Avenue, where candy will be distributed throughout the evening. Stuhler encouraged residents to participate by decorating their homes and joining in the festivities. “Let’s make it festive — let’s outdo Lambertville,” she said with a laugh.
Mayor Ryan Kennedy thanked the Recreation Committee, police, and public works departments for coordinating the new plan. “It’s a great community idea, and we appreciate all the work that’s gone into it,” he said.
The Council reminded residents to watch for official notices about road closures and parking adjustments as Halloween approaches.
