Property owners in Hopewell Township, Hopewell Borough, Pennington and several neighboring municipalities are now eligible for rebates of up to $700 for replacing portions of their lawns with native plants as Lambertville expands its successful lawn conversion program into a regional initiative.
Originally available only to Lambertville residents, the program has been extended to property owners in Hopewell Township, Hopewell Borough, Pennington, West Amwell, East Amwell, Stockton and Delaware Township as the municipalities work together on an application for a Resilient New Jersey Regional Planning Grant.
“Lambertville is partnering with all of these communities on an application for a regional resiliency grant,” organizers said in announcing the expansion. “We know we all need to work together in the face of extreme weather events.”
The rebate program offers $5 per square foot of lawn replaced with native plants, with a maximum rebate of $700 per residence. Qualifying projects must replace turf grass with gardens containing plants native to the region.
According to the program, replacing lawns with deep-rooted native plants can help absorb stormwater, reduce flooding and erosion, improve groundwater recharge, lower air temperatures, reduce air and water pollution, and create habitat for bees, butterflies, birds and other wildlife.
The rebate program is funded through a $20,000 Sustainable Jersey grant supported by the PSEG Foundation and will remain available until Oct. 1, 2026, or until funding is exhausted. Applications will be processed in the order they are received.
