Early Voting Begins, Free Legal Services for Seniors

by Diane Carroll

The Hopewell Township Committee met this past week and reminded everyone about voting and there was also a presentation by Legal Services which offers a number of free services for Seniors.

Early Voting Starts Saturday

Early in-person voting opens on Saturday October 25 and continues through November 2. Residents may vote at any designated early voting site in Mercer County. The closest in Hopewell Valley is at the Pennington Fire House, 2 Broemel Place, in Pennington. Voting hours are 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Saturday, and 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Sunday.

Mail-in ballots must be post marked on or before 8:00 pm Election Day or dropped off at a secure ballot box by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day. A ballot box is  located outside the Hopewell Township Municipal building, 201 Washington Crossing – Pennington Road, on the curb near the main entrance. You can obtain a mail-in ballot by contacting the Mercer County Clerk’s office by Tuesday, October 28, or you may get one in person from the county clerk, by 3:00 pm the day before Election Day.

You can vote in person on Election Day, November 4, at your polling location. To find your polling location and other election information visit Vote.NJ.Gov.

This year the Offices of Governor, Mercer County Commissioners and Clerk, Township Committee, Board of Education members, and Fire Commissioners are on the ballot as are two school district bond proposals.

Free Legal Advice for Seniors Discussed with Township Committee

Dan Rubin, Deputy Director of Central Jersey Legal Services and Senior Staff Attorney Kalea Edmundo described the free legal services available to all Seniors over the age of 60 and younger individuals whose income meets their guidelines.

Rubin explained that Legal Services is a non-profit law firm that provides legal assistance in civil law including housing, family law, consumer law, public benefits and domestic violence.

Legal Services’ Senior project can assist with concerns such as estate planning including wills, powers of attorney,  and advance directives, consumer fraud and scams, housing, and medical care.

“We would be happy to help on a one-on-one basis,” Rubin said and he urged residents to reach out on their website https://centraljerseylegalservices.org/get-legal-help/senior-citizens-help/# or by phone (609) 695-6249.
