Hopewell Township police have arrested a suspect in connection with a roadside altercation on Bear Tavern Road last month that left one man seriously injured.
According to a police press release, officers responded to a 9-1-1 call at approximately 12:15 p.m. on Feb. 25 reporting a fight between two men that involved an edged weapon. Officers arriving at the scene found the victim alert but suffering significant injuries. Emergency responders provided immediate medical care before transporting the victim to a local hospital.
Police identified the suspect who fled the area after the incident. Authorities said he was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and assault by auto. A warrant for his arrest was issued the same day as the incident.
Following a joint investigation involving Hopewell Township police, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service, the suspect was taken into custody March 12 in New Brunswick. He was processed by township police and lodged in the Mercer County Correctional Center pending Superior Court proceedings.
In a follow-up statement, police said the incident occurred a significant distance from Bear Tavern Elementary School and that the suspect fled northbound, away from the school. Officials determined during the initial on-scene investigation that there was no threat to the school.
Authorities said no additional information about the victim or the weapon is being released at this time.
