A free, guided “Pop-Up Walk” along the Delaware & Raritan Canal towpath will take place Saturday, May 9, offering participants a chance to explore local history while enjoying a spring morning outdoors.
The 3-mile round-trip walk begins at 10 a.m. at the Millstone Aqueduct parking lot on Mapleton Road and will run approximately 2 to 2½ hours. No registration is required.
Led by a seasonal historian, the walk will highlight the history of the D&R Canal and its surrounding communities, including the former village of Aqueduct, the impact of Carnegie Lake’s creation, and remnants of canal infrastructure along the route. Participants will also learn about former bridge tender houses, the now-inoperable turning bridge for the Dinky rail spur, and the once-busy canal hub near Turning Basin Park in Princeton.
The walk is moderately paced and open to all ages, though children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
Participants are asked to arrive promptly at 10 a.m. and should come prepared with water, weather-appropriate clothing, and comfortable walking or hiking shoes. The program will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.
The Millstone Aqueduct parking lot is located at 775 Mapleton Road in Plainsboro.
