Borough Democrats Deserve More Voices on County Committee

by Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

I am Keith Hovey, and I am seeking one of the two seats for District 1 Representative on the Mercer County Democratic Committee in the June primary. The role of the Mercer County Democratic Committee is to endorse Democratic candidates seeking elected office (from Hopewell Borough to the President of the United States), to decide the party platform, and to oversee party operations.

Sheri Hook and Krista Weaver do not need to hold these seats. The Mercer County Democratic Party By-Laws already consider them members of the Democratic County Committee. In Mercer County, every registered Democrat that serves in elected office is a voting member of the County Committee. As such, they already can vote on all County Committee matters. By running for a district seat, they effectively block two additional Democrats from joining the County Committee, thereby limiting the Borough’s influence.

Having Sheri and Krista serve as both members of Borough Council and elected district representatives for the County Committee actually hurts Hopewell Borough Democrats. Allowing them to serve in a dual role reduces the number of votes Hopewell Borough Democrats have when voting on County Committee matters. Neither Sheri nor Krista gets a second vote because they also hold the position of a district representative. Having dual office holders in District 1 means we are forfeiting fifty percent of our voting power. By electing district representatives for District 1 who are not on Borough Council, we can double our voice by having four possible votes on the County Committee instead of just two. A vote for Sheri and Krista will ensure Hopewell Borough Democrats abandon two potential seats on the County Committee and we remain underrepresented.

I am running because Democrats claim to be the party of inclusion. If we are as inclusive as we claim to be, then we should have more Democrats from Hopewell Borough representing us on the Mercer County Democratic Committee, not fewer. Consolidation of power inevitably limits diversity of ideas. Innovation rarely originates from a closed circle; it comes from a plurality of individuals.

Speaking of new ideas, our party and our nation are in dire need of them. Advocating for modern solutions like ranked choice voting is exactly the kind of innovation that a more diverse committee can bring to the table. If elected, I will advocate for ranked choice voting both in party endorsements and in primary elections to ensure that candidates earn majority support—a necessity underscored by the twelve candidates currently running in our congressional primary. I also support a prohibition on elected officials holding seats as district representatives on the County Committee to foster the diversity of representation Democrats espouse and to avoid the consolidation of power.

I hope that, as registered Democrats, you agree and I ask for your vote in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, June 2nd.

Keith Hovey

Candidate for Mercer County Democratic Committee

District 1, Hopewell Borough
