Halloween night is almost here. So make it scary for all the right reasons. The Mercer County sheriff’s office wants drivers to please watch out for trick-or-treaters running from house to house in the darkness. Trick-or-treaters too often get overexcited and quickly forget about safety. Federal estimates are that children are much more likely to be struck by a motor vehicle on Halloween than on any other date of the year. So, stay on the sidewalks and cross at corners only.
Sheriff Jack Kemler also recommends that kids should wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight, glow stick, or a reflective bag. “Dropping a small flashlight or glowstick into a child’s trick-or-treat bag to light up the bag while walking from house to house, can also help boost visibility,” Kemler says. (It’s not a bad idea for accompanying parents to improve their visibility in the darkness, too).
Lastly, all motorists should be extra careful on Halloween evening and try to drive five to ten miles per hour under the speed limit in residential areas.
Please make it a safe and fun night – for everyone – and have a Happy Halloween!
