Lawrence Hopewell Trail Opens Key Segment Along Provence Line Road

by MercerMe Staff

Community and corporate leaders, government officials and members of the Lawrence Hopewell Trail Board of Directors today celebrated the opening of the Lawrence Hopewell Trail segment called the King’s Highway Segment in Lawrence Township.

The 3,760-foot segment runs along Province Line Road from Route 206 to Bannister Drive, where it crosses into the Foxcroft neighborhood. It is a critical link between Carson Road Woods and Bristol-Myers Squibb Lawrenceville to the north and the Foxcroft neighborhood to the southeast. The trail then crosses Princeton Pike, taking walkers and riders into Maidenhead Meadows.

“The completion of the King’s Highway segment is a celebration of the strong partnerships that have made the LHT possible. We must always acknowledge our first three partners—Bristol-Myers Squibb, Educational Testing Services and Mercer County,” Eleanor V. Horne, Co-President, Lawrence Hopewell Trail, said to the many community leaders and governmental officials who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“The Lawrence Hopewell Trail has changed the way our municipalities, county and state government work together.  One example of this is the shared purchase, funding, and use of the Twin Pines playing fields, which connect to the LHT. This new segment is our latest testament to our shared commitment to work together on behalf of our communities,” said Becky Taylor, LHT Co-President.

Nineteen miles of the Lawrence Hopewell Trail’s planned 22-plus mile bicycle and pedestrian trail and transportation corridor through Lawrence and Hopewell Townships in Mercer County  – or 88 percent of the trail – are now complete with the opening of the King’s Highway Segment.

Federal highway funding totaling $500,000 for this segment of the trail, administered through the N.J. Department of Transportation, funded the new segment. Lawrence Township served as the grant applicant on behalf of the LHT and the residents and users of the trail from Lawrence and Hopewell Townships and beyond.

“The Lawrence Hopewell Trail is a county jewel—a true asset valued by residents far beyond Lawrence and Hopewell Townships,” said Brian M. Hughes, County Executive of Mercer County, the earliest and most steadfast supporter of the LHT.

“We are so proud that the King’s Highway Segment will receive the Complete Streets Excellence Award because of the engineering and design work by Lawrence Township engineer Jim Parvesse,” said David Maffei, Mayor of Lawrence Township.

“The LHT brings together core BMS values of corporate responsibility, community engagement, and commitment to environmental sustainability. BMS launched this initiative to help create a positive engagement of our communities in New Jersey,” said Lisa McCormick Lavery, Director of Corporate and Foundation Communications, Bristol-Myers Squibb.

“The King’s Highway Segment is an important addition to the Circuit Trails, a regional network of 750 miles of interconnected, multipurpose trails that extend from south of Philadelphia to the LHT in as the north-eastern most point,” said Christopher Linn, Manager, Office of Environmental Planning, Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.

“The Complete Streets approach allows for accommodations for all modes of transportation. This segment of the LHT is a great example,” added Elise Bremer-Nei, Bicycle and Pedestrian Advocate and Safe Routes to School Coordinator, Office of Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs, N.J. Department of Transportation.

“We are so proud that the King’s Highway Segment will receive the Complete Streets Excellence Award because of the engineering and design work by Lawrence Township engineer Jim Parvesse,” said David Maffei, Mayor, Lawrence Township.
